The light-hearted student profile for Jordan in the 1979 Geraldine High School Magazine lists his probable career as “Backing vocals for Barbara Streisand” – a prediction made in jest that has been closer to the mark than anyone would have imagined at the time. Jordan’s first band was the South Canterbury based Basement, one of the area’s biggest teen bands of the late 70’s. Vocalist Jordan Luck and guitarist Brian Jones relocated to Christchurch, where in 1981 they formed The Dance Exponents with Steve Cowan, David Gent and Michael Harralambi. Their popularity soared and the group signed to the Mushroom Records label to record their debut album Prayers Be Answered – today that album is a kiwi classic and Jordan remains one of New Zealand’s finest singer songwriters. Since then Jordan has written hundreds of songs that have sold thousands of copies and recorded a hand full of albums, as well as playing thousands of shows in almost every town and city in NZ. He is considered by many to be one of New Zealand’s finest songwriters. It’s a pretty safe bet that every one under 50 in New Zealand knows and loves Jordan Luck’s eccentric pop songs. Just like the BBQ & Buzzy Bee, Jordan’s music is part of Kiwi-ana culture. Recently The Exponents 1992 hit ‘Why Does Love Do This To Me’ (#47) and The Dance Exponents 1982 classic ‘Victoria’ (#8) were both voted into the all-time NZ songs from the past 75 years. Today, The Exponents may be gone, but Jordan is back, bigger and brighter than ever with a string of iconic Kiwi musicians in behind him in a band simply called LUCK. They are currently working on a new album, and are available to play gigs anywhere in NZ.
