Tui, from Thailand
My name is Arocha, but everybody in Geraldine called me Tui. I come from Thailand and I have been studying at Geraldine High School for two years. This year is my last year at school and I am planning to come back to New Zealand again next year for university. I had a great time living Geraldine.
I found my New Zealand life is a lot different when I compare it to my Thai lifestyle. I was surprised that Geraldine High School was physically a lot bigger in size than my Thai school, but there was only a quarter of the number of students. I really enjoyed joining in with school activities such as school drama production, wearable art competition and school social activities during this year and last year. That was great fun for me. I like the way that this school supports and encourages students to be involved in social activities, and I think you really need it when living in a small town like Geraldine.
I love the beautiful countryside around Geraldine, nice fresh air and no traffic. Now that I have been living here for a couple of years I am getting to know people, making more friends, learning about New Zealand culture and improving my English skills. At first I found that thinking and speaking in another language all the time was very hard for me, but now it is easier.
I have had a lot of new experiences since I came to New Zealand. I have lived with several different host families and enjoyed being part of their family. I have a lot of friends who I really like to spend time with and share experiences with. I love going to school everyday and try to enjoy myself the best. Just keep smiling is the best way for me.
